The AC System Enemy: 3 Chemicals You Should Never Use

Expert HVAC Solutions for Every Home

As a homeowner, it's important to keep your AC system in proper working condition to maintain a comfortable and healthy living environment. One essential aspect of HVAC maintenance that is often neglected is the drain line, which plays a critical role in removing excess moisture from your air conditioning system. However, it's crucial to use appropriate chemicals and techniques when cleaning and maintaining your drain line to avoid damage to your system, including the evaporator coil.

It's recommended to avoid using chemicals such as bleach, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, and some drain cleaners to clean your drain line. While these chemicals can break down organic material that accumulates in the drain line, they can also cause harm to your AC system's components, including the evaporator coil. Additionally, some drain cleaners can harm PVC drain pipes.

Instead, it's suggested to use products that are specifically designed for use in HVAC systems, such as an algaecide or biodegradable drain cleaner. Vinegar is a household product that is typically recommended for monthly use, using 1 cup followed by 1 gallon of hot water. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and use the appropriate amount of product for your system.

Along with using the right products, it's crucial to maintain your drain line regularly to prevent organic material buildup and clogs. This can include using a wet/dry vacuum to remove standing water in the drain pan and line, or using a stiff brush to clean the inside of the drain line.

Moreover, scheduling regular maintenance and cleaning with a licensed HVAC technician is essential. They can inspect your system for any issues or damage, and clean and maintain your system using approved products and techniques.

By following these tips and using the right products and techniques, you can ensure that your HVAC system's drain line remains clear and free of clogs. This can prevent damage to your system and ensure its proper functioning for years to come, including the evaporator coil.
